Ohh - Oobleck...

Making oobleck was wonderful (and messy) fun. Heather our cleaner thanked us for doing our experiment outside!

How to make oobleck

What you need:
Cornflour
Water
Food colouring
Bowl and spoon
Aprons

What to do:
1. Mix together 2 cups of cornflour and 1 cup of water
2. Add a couple of drops of food colouring
3. Stir until everything is well combined
4. Pick up some oobleck and experiment with it. Let it drip through your fingers, squeeze it and pour it.

Do you think oobleck is a liquid or a solid? What happens when you make it into a ball shape? Why do you think this happens?

Thanks to Olivia F for taking the great photos.

The Tooth Fairy has been busy...

In the last 3 days, 5 children from Room 15 have lost their teeth. The Tooth Fairy has certainly been busy in St Albans!

It's Clay Time

Today we began experimenting with clay - the children learned the routines that we will keep to when using clay in class. They asked some questions. Where does clay come from? How does it change from soft to hard? How do you get diffferent coloured clay?

Ka Boom! Welcome to term 2.

Welcome back to school! This term our inquiry topic is called Ka Boom! We will be finding out about solids, liquids and gases. This is what the class already know about science:

What is science?
  • Science is learning about animals
  • Science is about chemicals
  • Science is about when people learn about un-ordinary things
  • You make stuff in science
  • Go out on boats to look for interesting fish
What would a scientist do at work?

  • Experiments
  • Look at bugs
  • Look at ice cream
  • Look at boxes
  • Make volcanoes
  • Look at art in frames
  • Make fizzy things
  • Look at rocks
  • Look at trees
  • Put potions together into bottles to make new potions
  • Put chemicals into bottles
  • Put colours into a bottle and mix them to make them explode
  • They look through a magnifying glass
  • Look at clams

As you can read the children have some interesting ideas about science and scientists. Keep reading this blog and we will keep you informed about our learning.

Pirate Day

The treasure hidden in the pit in the library

What a fearsome crew of teachers!
Watching the parade
Ahoy there Mateys - it's the Room 15 crew!

Look at Libby's pirate cake - thanks Jo - it tasted great.
We all had a wonderful day. It began with a treasure hunt, then we made parrots, followed by Pirate PE then computer fun (and even a green screen!). After all the crazy activity we had a wonderful shared lunch. Thanks to everyone who contributed to make the day such a success. There will be some very tired pirates tonight. Straight into the hammocks tonight by 7pm or walk the plank!

Ahoy there me hearties!

In art we have been learning about different paint effects. We painted the paper blue, then we used chop sticks to make the waves. Some children made koru pattern waves. Then we cut out the shapes for the ship and we added details with vivid markers and white chalk. Our work is on the wall in class. Come and have a look!

Look carefully at Ruby

Look at Ruby and remember this photo was taken on Friday 1st April. Do you notice anything strange?

Charlotte's Praying Mantis

Today Charlotte told us about her Praying Mantis. She has had it for 2 months. It likes to eat flies and mosquitoes.
